Solar Energy Storage Hackathon 2016

Registration started on 18 April, 2016, this event lasted the next few weeks with workshop on Solar Energy, Carbon Footprint Calculation, and Social Business. 

The actual Solar Energy Storage Hackathon is on 14 - 17 June at the Science Center Singapore. Many secondary school students, junior college students and undergrads joined the hackathon.

This is a multidisciplinary event for collaborative creation over a weekend of solutions, prototypes and models of innovation for a sustainable development energy storage solution.


To find solutions to harness, store and use energy in a sustainable and cost effective manner to impact the lives of many.

Enable and empower communities to access energy in a sustainable fashion.

Impacting many sectors of society (Environment, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Youth, Schools, Sciences, Public Sector and Civil Society) on the challenges of climate change. Create awareness on sustainable energy, and find solutions to harness and store the energy to use in the various sectors. Create opportunities and collaborative initiatives.

Catalyze innovation in these sectors to promote multidisciplinary innovative projects.

Identify individuals with potential to be part of the change.

Expected Results

    • Unconventional approaches and solutions.
    • Collaboration of multidisciplinary teams.
    • Collaboration and closeness between actors and sectors.
    • Awareness and education challenges.

    • Deeper understanding of renewable energy sources and energy use.

The hackathon was run successfully with many great participants. The ideas were very innovative and the students really did learn from a lot of hands on hacking, more so than their regular books and lectures.

During the hackathon, the students tried out their theories and build energy storage devices to store solar energy. The solution range from weights to springs to water, all to store the energy. It was indeed a challenge to build a solution in a short amount of time and proper planning of time is very important.

The pressure is on to build and present the prototype and it has to work on the final presentation. Where we were outside to test the prototypes.

Thanks to our corporate sponsors Ricoh, the winners also won the new Ricoh Theta, 360 degree camera.

Some of the prototypes will be shared with rural communities and the students are invited to Nepal to continue to work on their prototypes to build an actual storage device, however, due to lack of funding, we could not send the winners to Nepal.

Throughout the events, there were several interns trained by us for event management, and they helped us greatly for making this a success.
